Difficult To Sleep Is Sign Of Senility?

Disturbed sleep not only makes a person feel tired often. A new study has revealed that poor sleep quality can also be a sign of risk for developing dementia in old age.

Recent studies in the United States found that the poor quality of sleep at night associated with preclinical Alzheimer’s symptoms. Scientists from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis studied the sleep patterns of 100 people aged 45 and 80. Volunteers are involved in this research did not have dementia, but half of them is derived from people with Alzheimer’s.

The results showed that those who often wake up five times every hour tend to show a buildup of amyloidal plaques in the brain, than those who did not experience sleep disturbances.

Amyloidal protein plaques is one of the early markers of Alzheimer’s disease a type of dementia that can grab a person’s ability to think, remember and perform simple tasks. Sign of plaque can now be detected by means of brain scans and spinal fluid examination. The presence of amyloidal plaques can be seen several years before patients show symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

“Initially we only take into account the duration, but it seems the quality of sleep is more important in this connection. We initially did not know that Alzheimer’s early stages can lead to poor sleep quality or vice versa. There might be changes in brain activity during sleep that causes fluid amyloidal decreased throughout the night . But we will examine these findings more deeply, “said Dr. Yo-El Ju, assistant professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

In his research, Yo-El Ju who is also member of the American Academy of Neurology, install equipment called the actigraph to measure sleep the volunteers for two weeks. Researchers also measured levels of amyloidal beta-42 in the spinal fluid of volunteers and monitor the increased Pittsburgh Compound B (PIB) for inspection by tomography equipment.

The result, 25 percent of the volunteers showed symptoms of preclinical Alzheimer’s, namely the presence of amyloidal plaques. The study found that people who wake up more than five times per hour are more likely to have amyloidal plaques. Those who sleep “inefficient” is also likely to have amyloidal plaques than those who sleep more efficiently. Not efficient, I mean, time asleep divided by time in bed score less than 85 percent.

How To Overcome Problem Sleep Disorders

Every living creature needs to sleep for just overcome fatigue or to replace lost energy. Although it seems trivial, but not everyone can get a maximum sleep time.

Aparajitha Verma, MD, medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Methodist Neurological Institute, Houston, United States said that the problem of sleep disturbance has affected at least more than 70 million people in America. He said the average person takes between three to four days to adjust to changing times. By preparing the bed to be better planned, hopefully someone has a better sleep habits.

Verma said, there are some simple tips are worth trying to overcome sleep disorders:

• Do not allow pets in bed
• No reading, eating or watching TV in bed
• Do not look at
• Set the “wind down” time before going to bed;
• Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol just before bedtime, because it can interfere with sleep. Instead, try drinking hot tea or milk to increase body temperature, which helps encourage and make sleep even more soundly.
• Exercise can help you sleep becomes more restful, but it should be done two hours before you go to bed.

New Recommendations Drinking Alcohol

Big fan of alcohol should be more careful. Science and Technology Committee of the British Parliament on Monday (09.01.2011), issue recommendations and the amount of alcohol consumption patterns are recommended.

The pattern of alcohol consumption was first issued in 1987. Recommendation at that time, men should drink a maximum of 21 units of alcohol and women 14 units of alcohol in one week. One unit of alcohol is equivalent to half a pint (284 millilitres) with alcohol content of 4 percent or 25 millilitres of alcohol levels of 40 percent.

In 1995, the amended recommendation. Men should not drink more than 3-4 units per day and women no more than 2-3 units per day. Limits for the elderly and pregnant women even less. After drinking in large quantities, one should not drink alcohol for two days or 48 hours. Although there are a couple of days should be free of alcohol, other days it does not mean they should not drink alcohol every day.

From the survey conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics United Kingdom, only 13 percent of respondents who control the number of drinks consumed. In fact, 90 percent of Britons have known such restrictions. The difficulty of measuring the size of the unit becomes a major obstacle.

UK Parliament Science and Technology Committee Chairman Andrew Miller told the BBC on Monday, said the rules of the consumption of alcohol was made to counter the adverse effects of alcohol consumption. Department of Health and Human Services says the United States, consumption of alcohol can cause various disorders in the body’s systems, ranging from impaired cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels), reproductive system, nervous, digestive, muscular, respiratory, to cause sleep disturbance. Alcohol can also trigger cancer, worsening hepatitis, and various other infectious diseases.
